The mysteries of the king'dom of heaven:

(1) the sower (Mk. 4.1-20; Lk. 8. 4-15).

THE same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.

2. And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.

3. And he spake many things un-to them in parables saying, Be-hold; a sower went forth to sow;

4. And when he sowed, some seeds / fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:

5. Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, be-cause they had no deepness of earth:

6. And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.

7.And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:

8. But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.

9. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

10. And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?

11. He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

12. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken

away even that he hath.

13. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not,

14. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:

15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are .dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. '

16. But blessed art your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

17. For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

18. Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.

19. When anyone heareth the word of the kingdom, and under-standeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.

20. But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;

21. Yet hath he not root in him-self, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and

by he is offended.

22. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he be-cometh unfruitful.

23. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bring-eth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

Second mystery, the tares among the wheat

(vs. 24-30, 36-43).

24. Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:

25. But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.

26. But when the blade was sprung, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.

27. So the servants of the house- lolder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?

28. He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said / Page 1016 / unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?

29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.

30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of har-vest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares,

and bind them in bundles to bum them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Third mystery, the grain of mustard seed

(Mk. 4. 31)-32). j

31. Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mus-tard seed, which a man took, and !sowed in his field:

32. Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is - the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds oj the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.

Fourth mystery, the leaven

(Lk. 13: 20, 21).

33. Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven. which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

34. All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:

35. That it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in / Page1017 / parables; I..will utter things which have been, kept secret from the foundation of the world.

The second mystery explained.

36. Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.

37. He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;

38. The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of.the wicked one;

39. The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

40. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.

41. The Son of man shall send forth his angels and. they shall gather out of his kmgdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity

42. And shall cast them into a fur-nace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

43. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the king-dom of their Father.Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Fifth mystery, the hid treasure.

44. Again, the kingdom qf heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

Sixth mystery, the pearl.

45. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seek-ing goodly pearls:

46. Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

Seventh mystery, the drag-net:

47. Again, the kingdom of dheaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind:

48. Which, when it was full they / Page 1018 / drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.

49. So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,

50. And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

51. Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord.

52. Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

Jesus returns to Nazareth: again rejected

(Mk. 6. 1-6;(:f. ~ Lk. 4. 16-32).

53. And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these par-ables, he departed thence.

54. And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that

they were astonished, and said,Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?

55. Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?

56. And his sisters, are they no(: all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?

57. And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.

58. And he did not many mighty works there because of their un-belief .

"If, as its legend states, the Pyramid was designed to monumentalize the entire code of ancient scientific knowledge, its makers would have needed to grade the pyramidion by scoring it with horizontal lines to represent different versions of the height or even by separating it into detachable sections. The image here is of an inscribed marble capstone, its tip formed of another, miniature pyramid, perhaps made of some other material. This, and perhaps other sections of the upper part of the pyramidion, could be removed or put in place as required.

But why should such a thing ever in practice be required, and why should such trouble be taken over capstone, pyramidions and minute variations of length? These are questions which need to be discussed in relation to the Pyramid's practical function. .

The Golden Tip .

As the literature of the Pyramid measurers shows, many large volumes can be filled with estimates of the Pyramid's external and internal dimensions and speculations about their geodetic, astronomical and prophetic symbolism. The study is so obsessively fascinating that researchers are inclined to lose sight of the most important question of why the whole vast edifice was built. There is no doubt that within the Pyramid's fabric are encoded many scientific laws and formulas, but the preservation of such knowledge can scarcely have been the only motive of its builders. Its numerical properties must surely have had some practical purpose in relation to the form of science which the Pyramid was designed to serve.

There has been much talk in recent years of 'pyramid power' and the possible function of the Great Pyramid as an accumulator and trans- former of cosmic energies. The idea certainly accords with the traditional use of the Pyramid in connection with initiation, magic and mysticism, and it is supported by the occurrence of symbolic or 'magical' number series in its dimensions. The use of symbolic numbers in ancient temples was to procure the invocation of the god or aspect of cosmic energy which those numbers symbolized. Pyramid investigators are confronted with an instrument designed for a type of science which today is no longer recognized. It is not, however, beyond recovery, for its records are preserved in the language of number, built into the Pyramid's dimensions, and these provide certain clues to the nature of the Pyramid's original function.

All Pyramid measurers, and all who study its dimensions, purpose or any of its other aspects, find themselves inexorably drawn to the matter of its apex. Many of the clues within the Pyramid's geometry Page number 150 (omitted) and numbers point towards it, and several investigators have expressed the feeling that these clues were deliberately contrived, as if the builders were concerned to leave a record of their scientific code in monumental form, to be interpreted and put to use again by some future generation. Peter Lemesurier, the latest and most convincing of the interpreters of Pyramid chronologies and prophecy, gives detailed reasons in his Great Pyramid Decoded for claiming that the historical outline of the six thousand years following its building in 2623 BC is recorded in the dimensions of the Pyramid's interior spaces. They are said to foretell the collapse of the present civilization in about the year AD 2004, followed some thirty years later by the Messianic return and the birth of a new order. That, according to other readers of Pyramid prophecy, is the time when the 'stone that the builders rejected', the missing capstone on the Pyramid, will be restored to the apex, reactivating the entire structure in accordance with its original purpose.

"While in Egypt, I was surprised to learn from an Egyptologist at the Citadel thatthe outer casing stones of the Great Pyramid were not plundered to construct the mosques of Cairo, as it has been reported, but were eroded by sandstorms over time. I ques-tioned him as to why the Second Pyramid still had its casing stones intact at the top if this was true, but he didn't have an answer. My impression, while walking around the nine-pyramid complex, was that the stones had actually been shaken loose by some event that caused a buildup of vibration to the point that the pyramids became runaway vibrators. The pyramid at Meidum, with its outer casing stripped and piled high around its base, would certainly fit this description of events. The stones on this pyramid were stripped off through the action of forces other than the picks of mosque builders. So which theory is correct? Perhaps the question really is, Which theory is more likely? The evidence can be inter-preted many ways. When I look far into the past, I can discern the existence of sciences of which there are no surviving records. They have either been destroyed or complete records never existed. Did science account for the amazing artifacts I had seen throughout Egypt? And did science also ex-plain, at least in part, this culture's demise?"

"The volume enclosed by the Pyramid, had it been constructed on the full square base, would have been 94,478,400 cubic feet in geodetic measure. The fact that the base sides were hollowed in suggested to me that the actual mass of the Pyramid had been engineered in such a way as to cause the whole structure to be harmonically tuned to some basic value connected with matter itself.

The search for this particular value was a lengthy one and the clue that led me finally to a possible solution was a study of the construction of the Grand Gallery. The height of the Gallery was the first indication that it was not just an elaborate access passage. Previous measurements made by scientific investigators pointed to some interesting possibilities. Slight buckling caused by the massive weight of the Pyramid above, settling over thousands of years, has now resulted in the ceiling of the cham-ber having an uneven surface. The present mean height was found to be 339.2 British inches, while heights taken at various individual points were 333.9 to 346 inches.

Equating the results I had obtained. from all the other aspects of the structure, 1 am certain that the original height of the chamber was 345.6 geodetic inches, which gives a value of 28.8 feet. The height of the chamber was obviously equivalent to the harmonic of 288, or twice the speed of light. If it was in fact a cavity resonator, as I now suspected, then the length and all the other measurements should show indications of harmonics. The value that I calculated for length was extremely close to that of the one published in Davidson and Aldersmith's book, their value being 1836 inches, and my theoretical value 1833.46 geodetic inches.

A considerable amount of time was required to calculate a satisfactory value for the length of the Gallery. I eventually found that the amount of hollowing-in at the base provided the clue. If 57.6 (the amount in inches by which the base is inset) is divided by pi or 3.1415927, the resulting value is 18.334649. The harmonic equivalent of 1833.46 when applied to Gallery length would ensure that the wave-forms set up in the cavity were finely tuned to light frequencies.

A search of my physics books revealed that 1836 was the closest approximation the scientists have calculated to the mass / page 96 (Diagram 15 omitted) / ratio of the positive hydrogen ion, i.e. the proton, to the electron. lf we dare to assume that the value of 1833.46 is the true geometric ratio then the wave-forms in the Gallery will also have a harmonic affinity with the structure of the atom, the building block of the universe itself. Pressing on with this train of thought I again consulted a book on atomic physics and found that the mass of the electron is given as 9.2 x 10-31 kilo-grammes. I believe that, according to the clues presented by the Pyramid, the true value of electron mass, in the harmonic sense, could be taken as a standard of 9.24184 x 10-31 kilo- grammes.

If this harmonic mass value is multiplied by 1833.46, the proposed mass ratio of the proton and electron, we have

9.24184 x 1833.46 = 16944.5

This appears perfectly logical to me, as a value of 16944 for the proton mass harmonic would lay the basis for a complete harmonic scale for the atomic table of elements. This as been demonstrated in another chapter.

I can almost hear the shouts of anguish from the scientific: community, so I hasten to add that I set up these proposals only ,- for discussion and experiment. I am sure that natural law is not a haphazard affair and that harmony is maintained throughout all physical processes.

The recess in the floor at the bottom end of the Gallery over the access passage to the Queen's Chamber also indicates a connec-tion with the harmonic of light frequency. The length of the recess is given as 263.8 British inches in Aldersmith and David- son's book. I believe that a very accurate check will show that this recess is 263.523 geodetic inches, which would equal the square root of the harmonic of the reciprocal of light, which is 694444. Investigators have been intrigued by the strange reson-ances in the chamber from any sounds made within it. Other measurements I have checked indicate a harmonic association with time. A complete book would be necessary to explore all the mathematical complexities of the passages and chambers to demonstrate how the structure has been engineered to produce, harmonic wave-forms tuned to all the natural laws. A COMMON CULTURE WITH ALIENS?

"Searches for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) are being spearheaded by scientists at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California. The efforts have concentrated on searches for radio transmissions that could be artificial in origin, and have used various large radio telescopes around the world. This option is familiar also from fictional depictions such as Carl Sagan's Contact (in which it generally pays off). But radio is not the only conceivable channel: narrow-beamed lasers could span interstellar distances with a modest power consumption. We already have the technology, if we so wish, to proclaim our presence many light-years away by either of these methods; indeed, the combined effects of all radio transmitters, radars and so forth would in any case reveal us to any aliens with sensitive radio telescopes. We know so little about the origin and potentialities of life that it is hard to assess what method for detecting it is best. So it is sensible to use every available technique and be alert to all possibilities. But we should be mindful of 'observational selection': even if we do discover something, we can't infer that it is 'typical', because our instruments and techniques restrict us to detecting a biased and incomplete selection of what may actually be out there.

There may be no other intelligent life elsewhere. Even if there is, it may be on some water-covered world where super- dolphins enjoy a contemplative oceanic life, doing nothing to reveal themselves. There are heavy odds against success, but systematic scans for artificial signals are a worthwhile gamble because of the philosophical import of any detection.

A manifestly artificial signal-even if it were as boring as lists of prime numbers, or the digits of 'pi' - would imply that 'intelli-gence' wasn't unique to the Earth and had evolved elsewhere. The nearest potential sites are so far away that signals would take many years in transit. For this reason alone, transmission would be primarily one-way. There would be time to send a measured response, but no scope for quick repartee!

Any remote beings who could communicate with us would have some concepts of mathematics and logic that paralleled our own. And they would also share a knowledge of the basic particles and forces that govern our universe. Their habitat may be very different (and the biosphere even more different) from ours here on Earth; but they, and their planet, would be made of atoms just like those on Earth. For them, as for us, the most important particles would be protons and electrons: one electron orbiting a proton makes a hydrogen atom, and electric currents and radio transmitters involve streams of electrons. A proton is 1,836 times heavier than an electron, and the number 1,836 would have the same connotations to any 'intelligence' able and motivated to transmit radio signals. All the basic forces and natural laws would be the same. Indeed, this uniformity - without which our universe would be a far more baffling place - seems to extend to the remotest galaxies that astronomers can study. (Later chapters in this book will, however, speculate about other 'universes', forever beyond range of our telescopes, where different laws may prevail.)

Clearly, alien beings wouldn't use metres, kilograms or seconds. But we could exchange information about the ratios of two masses (such as the ratio of proton and electron masses) or of two lengths, which are 'pure numbers' that don't depend on what units are used: the statement that one rod is ten times as long as another is true (or false) whether we measure / page 25 / lengths in feet or metres or some alien units"

"AD 33, when a sudden explosive initiative on the part of a transformer (or a transforming, explosive initiative) will contribute hugely to restoring humanity's balance and rein-tegration with the cosmos.

Once again biblical enthusiasts are not slow to pinpoint the events apparently referred to. The first of these dates, they claim, represents the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, and the second his crucifixion. And indeed, the dates do seem to fit,35 as do the symbolic consequences. Yet, once again, other salvationist initia-tives were in the air at the time, too, notably within Mahayana Buddhism.

With the entry into the Grand Gallery, all kinds of extraordinary things now start to happen. Initially, the ascending floor simply continues for a further 25 P", terminating in a small notch or 'peak' that once served to retain a bridging floorslab which sealed off the Queen's Chamber passage see next chapter). To the right, a low tunnel beneath a missing ramp-stone, with its N-S axis 35.76 P" beyond the Gallery's south wall and its floor on the level of the Queen's Chamber floor, leads the explorer to the right, only to tumble at a point that lies 89.61 P" further on (code equivalent: 3 x 29.84 P") - measured from axis to axis - into the top end of the 'well shaft' leading down to the lower passageways (see previous chapter). Overhead, the roof height has suddenly leapt upwards by 286.1 P", while the 1836 P"-long roof (code equivalent: 153 x 12) displays 40 (8 x 5) separate blocks of limestone set ratchet-wise, evidently so as to anchor them into the Pyramid's masonry.

huge, strange letters were discovered on the rock of Gcivea in South America. One of the rocks was sculpted into an enormous bearded man's head wearing a helmet. According to Braghine, the natives call it the "giant Atlas." Bernardo da Sylva Ramos, an amateur Brazilian archaeologist, thinks it likely that the letters are genuinely Phoenician. They are engraved on an almost inaccessible rock at 2800 feet (840 m) above sea level. The text reads in translation:

"Of all the canonical numbers the most notable is 3168. The New Jerusalem measures 48,000 furlongs or 31,680,000 feet round the perimeter of its four sides; the mean perimeter of the Stonehenge sarsen circle is 316.8 feet; the perimeter of the square 12 hides of Glastonbury is 31,680 feet; the significance of 31,680 in the canon of cosmology is illustrated in Fig. 11, (Fig omitted) and we shall also find this number set round the border of Plato's mystical city, described in Laws.

The Stonehenge sarsen circle with circumference of 316,8 feet contains area of 888 square yards, 888 being the number of Jesus, which is equal to 1080 square MY. The circle contained within a square of perimeter 316,8 feet, corresponding to the bluestone circle at Stonehenge, has an area of 666 square MY. Thus the two stone circles at Stonehenge have areas of 1080 and 666 square MY, these two numbers representing the opposite poles of lunar and solar or negative and positive energy.

The number 144 or 121 is. characteristic of the New Jerusalem scheme, and 3168 demonstrates the value of " pi " as 22/7 in terms of this number, for 144 x 7 = 1008 and 144 x 22 = 3168.

in Plato's city

A remarkable use of the number 3168 occurs in Plato's account in Book V of Laws of the mystical dimensions of the perfect city. Throughout his work Plato makes guarded reference to a secret canon of numbers that applies universally to every aspect of human life and activity, including government, astronomy, acoustics, kinetics, plane and solid geometry and divination. Linear measure- ments, areas and volumes are obviously incommensurabie, but Plato declares that there are certain numbers that link these with each other and with all phenomena capable of being measured. As an example of these numbers, the study of which Plato recommends as the most sanctifying of all pursuits, he gives 5040. This is the ideal number of citizens in the state and serves other purposes in con- / page 79 / nection with the framing of laws and standards. The reason why it is most suitable for all matters of division is that for its size it has the greatest number of divisors, 60 in all, including the entire decad, the numbers 1-10. Another property of the number 5040 is that it is the radius of a circle with circumference 31,680. Further examina-tion of the numerical foundations of Plato's state shows that the scheme to which he refers is the ancient plan of the cosmic temple.

The lawgivers in Plato's state are reminded that the perfect human society would be one in which all possessions, wives, children, land and chattels were held in common, where all the citizens were of one mind and acted together so harmoniously that it were as if eyes, ears and hands were also common property. To keep this ideal alive is the function of the prophet. Human nature and conditioning, however, demand a more practical alternative, 'very near to the first in immortality and second to it in merit'. This is provided in Laws V.

Plato's state is arranged in a manner that can scarcely be under-stood literally, and is obviously intended, like the New Jerusalem, as a geometer's allegory. The land is all divided into twelve parts, each dedicated to one of the twelve gods and populated by one of the twelve tribes of the 5040 households. The city is similarly divided, forming a microcosm of the state as a whole. In the centre of the city is the acropolis and

from this centre he must divide up the city itself and the whole country into twelve parts. The twelve parts must be equalised by making those of good land small and those of inferior land greater. He must mark off 5040 allotments, and each of these he must cut in two and join two pieces to form the allotments, so that each contains a near piece and a distant piece-joining the piece next to the city with the piece furthest off, the second nearest with the second furthest, and so on with the rest.'

The only way in which this division can be represented is by a circle of radius 5040, a hundred times larger than that of Stone- henge measured in feet; the perimeter of this circle is 31,680. In Fig. 24 (fig 24 omitted) the radius of the circle should be divided equally into 5040 parts to produce 5040 concentric circles. These are bisected into 10,080 semi- circles by the diameter and positioned out in Plato's manner into 5040 double allotments, each of equal area.

In this scheme 31,680 is not only the circumference of the circular state, but also the area of each of its 2520 pairs of rings, proving Plato's assertion that linear and area measurements can be made /

commensurable by number. The entire circle is divided into two halves, each containing 39,916,800 square units of land. These numbers, which are inherent in the New Jerusalem scheme, have the following significance:

5040, the radius of the circular city, is the product of the numbers 1 - 7; 7920, the side of the square city, is the product of numbers 8 - 11. In each case the perimeter of the city is 31,680. In Plato's Republic is the famous, cryptic reference to the 'marriage number', which should be consulted by the guardians of the state in all matters relating to the seasonal union of male and female. There appear to be two numbers involved, adding up to a third, but the riddle is so obscure that no firm solution has been reached despite the vast literature on the subject. For various reasons the number 12,960,000 or 36002 is most commonly proposed, and this would seem appro-priate, for 12,960 = 5040 + 7920. 12,960 therefore represents the union of square and circle, symbol of the sacred marriage, and the gematria is also appropriate, for 1296 = (Greek letters omitted) Mary mother of Jesus.

In Laws VIII 848D the twelve radial divisions of the circular state are each inscribed with a village, a market place and a temple to / Page 81 / one of the twelve gods, and Plato insists that all existing shrines of local and abot:iginal deities be respected, following the ancient custom. Now the twelve gods are(Greek letters omitted) the name carved on the stone pillar at the centre of Athens, from which all distances. were measured and where the sacred paths converged. The number of their name is 1008, the diameter of the circle with circumference 3168, and within one unit 3168 is the number of (Greek letters omitted) temple of the twelve gods. Three versions of the Holy City are placed together below.

Plato's twelve gods were arranged by astrologers into six pairs of opposites, and these correspond to the twelve gods of Stonehenge whose days are discovered in the astronomical features of the temple, indicated, as Professor Hawkins shows, by six two-way stone alignments to the eight extreme positions of the moon and four of the sun.

A mystery too deep for present inquiry concerns the ancient geographical arrangement of temples in relation to each other. That there was some esoteric scheme linking the various centres has always been an item of occult tradition, and the idea is supported by the discovery of identical figures of numerology in all cosmic temples;..."

At the time when [the Emperor] Justinian closed its doors, [the Academy] might have celebrated its 916th .j anniversary. . . the Academy changed considerably in the: course of centuries; it is only the Old Academy that may be considered as Plato's Academy, and it lasted a century and a half or less. To this one might reply that every institution is bound to change with the vicissitudes of time and that the longer it lives the more it must be expected to change. Bearing these remarks in mind, we may put it this way: the Academy of Athens, the Academy founded by Plato, lasted more than nine centuries.

Those who find chronology difficult to comprehend without analogies might wish to ponder this: the duration of the Platonic Academy (apparently on the same site) in Athens was equivalent to the duration to date on English soil of Westminster Abbey; or, the 916 years of life of the Academy as a philosophical institution was equal to the amount of time which elapsed from the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 to the year 1982. (And even after the dismemberment, the Academy continued 'in exile' in Persia, etc.) We thus see that Plato's Academy existed longer on one spot than England has existed since William the Conqueror.

The Platonic tradition in the broader sense, with its gnostic and heretical overtones and its myriad manifestations in later ages in such bizarre and fascinating figures as Giordano Bruno, Marsilio Ficino, John Dee, and even Sir, Philip Sidney and the Earl of Leicester - not to mention the troubadours of Provence, Dante in Italy, the Albigensians in j France, the Knights Templar, and an infinite range of 'fringe' , causes over two and a half millennia, is an agonizing and / Page 507 / impossible problem for the orthodox mind, whatever its creed."

Fishes in the Net

Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land full of great fishes, one hundred and fifty and three' John 21;11). '

Why there should have been exactly 153 fishes in the net is a ques-tion which has puzzled commentators from the earliest times. Obviously the number had an esoteric significance, and by reference to the sacred canon of number and geometry this may be discovered. The parables and many of the episodes in the New Testament form the literary expressions of geometrical processes. This is particularly clear in the case of the 153 fishes. "

"...1224 is equal to 8 times 153,and 153 is the sum of the numbers 1-17. Reference has already been made on earlier pages to the number 1224; the more important associations of this number are summarised on the next page.

The account in the twenty-first and last chapter of St John's Gospel of the miraculous draught of 153 fishes provides an excellent illustration of the ancient canon of numerology, rediscovered by the early Christian scholars and adopted for literary purposes in the composition of their sacred writings. The stages in the development of the story are represented in Fig. 31; Fig 31 (omitted) the interpretation is as follows:

1. Seven disciples are on the shore of Tiberias. Simon Peter enters a boat to go fishing; the others follow..." / Page 97 /

2. That night they caught nothing. In the morning they saw the resurrected Jesus on the shore, but failed to recognise him. He said to them, 'Cast the net on the right side of the ship and ye shall find.' They did so and made a great catch..."

3. 'Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him (for he was naked), and did cast himself into the sea.'

'And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits) dragging the net with fishes.' In the net were 153 great fishes.

The net, 1224, with fishes, 1224, together number 2448 and 2448 is the measure round the perimeter of the 'fish' in the net. This great fish is divided into sixteen equal parts, forming the tetraktys of the Pythagoreans. The number 153 is brought out in two ways. First, the width of each of the sixteen lesser fish is 153; then there are sixteen smaller making up one greater fish, seventeen in all, and 153 is the sum of the numbers 1-17.

The disciples are said to be 200 cubits from land. The Greek cubit or ell, made up of 25 digits, was a length of about 181 inches, which may be 1'52 or 1'53 feet. 200 cubits is therefore equal to about 306 feet, and 306 is the radius or distance from centre to circum-ference of the circles that represent the disciples.

Stories such as this were composed to illustrate a secret doctrine, orally transmitted, to which we no longer have direct access, but which may to some extent be inferred through the contemplation of its symbols. The three intersecting circles produce the diagram of Hebrew mysticism, the Tree of Life,..""...1625, identified by its number with the tetraktys, ..." "...1626, the corresponding symbol in the Greek system. In the final episode of the 153 fishes, the disciples come to land and there is Jesus with a fire of coals and a fish laid upon it and bread. Fire, fish and bread represent the three worlds united in the cabalistic tree the creative essences of / Page 98 / the upper world and the material body of the lower being linked by the mercurial spirit of the fish.

In this way the gnostic masters entertained and aided the memory of their pupils. Children still love the story of the miraculous draught of fishes, for it was constructed by references to the literary canon to have an enduring appeal in all ages. The same standards of number and proportion, by which all the arts and sciences of antiquity were regulated, provided poets and storytellers with the themes on which to exercise their individual talents. It is now recognised, that the ancient myths, including those of Christianity, have an astronomical reference, illustrating the progression of the seasons and aeons. Yet the cosmogonies are not derived merely from the stars; they are equally extensions of the alchemical language, recording the adven. tures of metals in the retort, their marriages and aversions, their changes of quality and colour. Again, these myths reflect the pro. cesses of the human mind and the cycles of influences by which it is governed. The origin of cosmogony must therefore be sought in the numbers of the Temple, which were said to comprehend every aspect of nature, providing the canon of literature as of all other arts. The cabalists believe that the sacred books of the Old Testament, read in the Hebrew language with an. understanding of their numerical composition, have the power of communicating directly with the soul, avoiding the censorship of the intellect. Even in translation the episodes of scripture and mythology retain something of this quality, for the fact is, inexplicable though it may be, that there are certain archetypal stories and situations which recur over and again, not only in mythology and the romantic imagination, but also in the record of actual historical events."

V7. The 1st angel sounded and the third part of trees burnt....

V8. The 2nd angel sounded .... and the third part sea became blood....

V9. The third part creatures in sea died.... third part ships destroyed.

V10. And the third angel sounded.... third part rivers.

V11. Third part water became wormwood.... bitter men died.

V12. 4th Angel sounded.... third part sun.... third part moon.... third stars, third part darkened.... shone not third part.

V13. Woe, woe, woe to earth.... trumpets of the 3 angels.

CHAPTER 9

V1. And 5th angel sounded....

V5 ....tormented 5 months.

V10. Power to hurt men 5 months.

V12. There come 2 woes more.

V13. And the 6th angel sounded.... voice from 4 horns of golden alter.

V14. Saying to 6th angel.... loose the 4 angels which are bound....

V15. And the 4 angels were loosed.... for to slay third part of men.

V16. Number of horsemen 2 hundred thousand.

V18 .By these 3 was third part men killed.

CHAPTER 10

V3. 7 thunders uttered.

V4.And when 7 thunders uttered.... seal up those things 7 thunders uttered.

V7. Days of the voice of the 7th angel.

CHAPTER 11

V2. Tread under foot 42 months.

V3. Power into 2 witnesses....prophesy 1260 days....

V4. These are 2 olive trees.... 2 candlesticks.

V9. See dead bodies 3 and half day....

V10. Because these 2 prophets.

V11. And after 3 and an half days.... spirit of life entered in to them....

V13. Earthquake tenth part of city fell. 7000 men slain.

V1. Upon her head crown of 12 stars.

V3. Dragon having 7 heads.... 10 horns.... 7 crowns.

CHAPTER 13

V1. Beast having 7 heads.... 10 horns....upon his horns 10 crowns (out of sea).

V3. One of his heads wounded.

V5. Power given him 42 months.

V11. Another beast out of earth 2 horns....

V12. 1st beast before him.

V18. Number of beast 666.

CHAPTER 14

V1. Lamb and with him one hundred forty and four thousand.

V3. Before throne 4 beasts.... but the hundred and forty and four thousand.

V9. And 3rd angel followed....

V14. Cloud one sat like unto Son of man.

 V20. By the space of 1,600 furlongs.

CHAPTER 15

V1. Sign in heaven 7 angels.... having 7 last plagues.

V6. And the 7 angels came out.... having 7 plagues.

V7. And one of the 4 beasts.... gave into 7 angels 7 golden vials.

V8..No entry.... 7 plagues of the 7 angels were fullfilled.

CHAPTER 16

V1. Voice saying to 7 angel.... pour out vials.

V2. 1st went poured vial on earth.....

V3. 2nd angel poured vial on sea.

V4. And the 3rd angel on rivers.

V8. And the 4th angel on sun.

V10. And the 5th angel on seat of beast.

V12. And the 6th angel great river Euphrates.

V13. I saw 3 unclean spirits.

V17. And the 7th angel poured into air.

V19. Great city divided into 3 parts.

CHAPTER 17

V1. Came one of 7 angels.... which had 7 vials.

V3. Beast having 7 heads and 10 horns.

V7 I will tell of beast with 7 heads and 10 horns.

V9. Wisdom. The 7 heads are 7 mountains.

V10. There are 7 kings: 5 are fallen and one is and the other is not.

V11. Even he is the 8th and is of the 7.

V12. And the 10 horns.... are 10 kings....one hour with beast.

V13. Have one mind.

V16. And the 10 horns which....

V8. Come in one day.

V10. For in one hour.

V17. For in one hour such great riches are come to nought....

V19. For in one hour is she made desolate.

V8. Deceive the nations.... 4 quarters of the earth.

V14. This is 2nd death.

V1. Saw 1st heaven 1st earth pass away.

V9. One of 7 angels which had 7 vials.... full of 7 last plagues.

V12. Had 12 gates... at gates 12 angels.... 12 tribes Israel.

V13. One east 3 gates.... north 3 gates.... south 3 gates.... west 3 gates.

V14. Wall of city 12 foundations.... in them 12 apostles of lamb.

V16.City lieth 4 square... 12 thousand furlongs.

V17. Wall thereof 144 cubits.

V19. 1st foundation jasper.... 2nd sapphire.... 3rd chaldcedony.... 4th emerald.

V20. 5th sardonyx.... 6th sardius.... 7th chrysolyte.... 8th beryl.... 9 topaz.... 10 chrysoprasus.... 11th jacinth.... 12 anethyest.

V21. And the 12 gates were 12 pearls.... every several gate one pearl.
